Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Amazing bicycle-mobility planning resources

(From Europe of course.)

1. Collection of Cycle Concepts. This is a planning guide published by the Roads Directorate of Denmark. Interesting that the "Roads" Directorate believes that bicyclists are legitimate road users. That tends to not come across with U.S. state "highway" departments.

2. Cycling: the way ahead for towns and cities. This European Commission handbook stems from the idea that the worst enemies of the bicycle in urban areas are not cars, but longheld prejudices. It therefore corrects some of the prejudices connected with the use of the bicycle as a regular mode of transport in the urban environment. It also suggests some simple, inexpensive and popular measures, which could be implemented inmediately.

3. Kids on the move project in Europe "highlights the importance of the concept of "child mobility" and provides examples of existing initiatives developed by schools, transport operators or local authorities aimed at promoting the mobility, health and well-being of Europe’s 90 million children."
