Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Chuck E. Cheese in Flint Township
Jane Hale | The Flint Journal. After several recent brawls, Chuck E. Cheese in Flint Township is no longer allowing alcohol or gang colors.

From "Chuck E. Cheese drops alcohol, bans profanity, gang symbols," in the Flint Journal. Reminds me of the murder story from Sunday, "3 Killed in Largo Pizzeria Shooting," from the Post. But no one should argue that the center cities are the only place to worry...

I had an interesting conversation yesterday with a local restauranteur. He described walking with people from place to place along H Street, with no problems, and then afterwards, having the people (from Cleveland Park) exclaim at how dangerous the neighborhood is.

The issue really is violence, the propensity for violence, impulse control, and access to weapons. The center city no longer has a lock on a region's most violent people.
