Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

is possible. And you don't have to go to the lengths of this gentleman. He rides about 11 miles to work at the World Bank, and he brings his child to daycare on the way. (His wife brings their daughter back in the evenings, I don't think by bicycle.)

This bicycle is "tricked out" to accommodate a child seat. But I don't know the details... you can check out the rider's blog, and ask him...

Anyway, it is possible to take children to day care without having to drive.

I will admit it's likely a commitment and not very fun and it's easy for me to say, since I don't have children...

(Top two photos from Bike to Work day last Friday, at Freedom Plaza, Washington, DC.)
