Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Notions Capitol, in "March on Potomac Gardens," and City Desk, in "WHITE GENTRIFIERS MEET THEIR BLACK NEIGHBORS. . . .THROUGH THE WEB" report on contested spaces in Southeast Washington, where some residents blame the nearby residents of the Potomac Gardens housing project for area muggings.

A heated thread on a local neighborhood e-list ends with the local Councilmember, Tommy Wells, organizing weekly potlucks to bring the different groups of residents together.

I do understand both sides. And also recommend that people read two books by Elijah Anderson, Code of the Street and Streetwise...

-- Dissecting the 'code of the street'
-- Read the book, watch the movie
--The Code of the Streets article from The Atlantic Magazine
--
I guess the counterpiece would be Bonfire of the Vanities...
