Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

More urban agriculture

1. A commenter calls our attention to this article in yesterday's New York Times, "Urban Farmers’ Crops Go From Vacant Lot to Market" about urban agriculture efforts in New York City, and in other major cities across the country.

2. And I missed including a link to the newsletter Backyard Poultry.

3. And DC Urban Gardeners will be doing a regular set of programs in association with the Historical Society of Washington. They also have a listserv.

4. I guess it's not really a surprise that the UDC Cooperative Extension program isn't really working much on providing gardening and other typically cooperative extension activities in the city, even though the university is designated an "urban" land grant institution.

See this piece by Susan Harris, from one of the many area gardening blogs.

Of course, Maryland and Virginia have active Department of Agriculture extension programs and agricultural colleges to support them. DC doesn't have a department of agriculture, but there is no reason that UDC, as an "urban" land grant institution, couldn't develop stellar urban agriculture programs.
