Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Subsidizing transit not roads

From the Progressive Railroading e-newsletter:

Miami-Dade Transit: More businesses subsidize monthly passes

More south Florida businesses are taking advantage of Miami-Dade Transit’s corporate discount program, which provides group discounts of up to $12.50 plus tax savings to employees who purchase their monthly Metropasses through a pre-tax payroll deduction. And many area employers are furthering workers’ savings by subsidizing the transit passes.

For example, next month, the University of Miami will begin fully subsidizing Metropasses to employees who earn less than $35,000, and providing a 50 percent subsidy to employees earning between $35,000 and $100,000. In anticipation, the number of university employees that have purchased transit passes has nearly doubled in the last month from 1,216 to 2,402.
