Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Tomorrow is Bike to Work Day (in the DC region)

1. Information here for the DC region, from the Washington Area Bicyclists Association.

2. Newspapers in other regions have been featuring articles on Bike to Work activities. Some places, like the DC region, have Bike to Work Week, others have a Bike to Work Day, while Massachusetts is focusing on bicycling as a legitimate transportation mode for the entire month. Technically, May is National Bike to Work Month.

a. The Seattle Times has a nice piece, "Seattle pushes pedaling," with an associated large page pdf (I don't know if the page is running in its entirety in today's newspaper--I'll try to pick up a copy in a couple days) on safe bicycling, "How to share the road: a guide for cyclists and drivers."

b. The Boston Globe had an article, "Menino pedals for cycle-friendly city," that also featured a photo of Mayor Tom Menino bicycling.

c. And the Denver Rocky Mountain News focused on the upcoming bicycle sharing program at the Democratic National Convention, in "Convention project to push pedals."

3. 50 ways to celebrate Bike Month from the League of American Bicyclists.
