Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Chicago manages to provide real-time bus information

albeit not for all of their lines, and there are glitches. according to reports. See "CTA Bus Tracker online program adding more routes" from the Chicago Tribune, the news release from the Chicago Transit Authority, "Additional Routes and Enhanced Features Available on CTA’s Bus Tracker Web Site Beginning Monday," and the CTA Bus Tracker website. The website uses Google Maps to show you bus routes and stops, and you can click on them for bus info.

Note to Dr. Gridlock... Jon Hilkevitch, the "Getting Around" columnist for the Tribune, also does video stories for the Chicagoland TV channel (equivalent to the DC area Newschannel 8--which I don't get via DirectTV). Maybe that's an opportunity? The story link has a bunch of links to past video stories...

Don't know why the CTA seems to be able to pull off the provision of real-time bus information, and WMATA can't. See "Metro to Suspend System Providing Bus Arrival Times" from the Post.
