Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Home energy consumption (and historic preservation)

The article "Time to Button Up," in the Boston Globe has great quotes and a graphic regarding the payback periods for energy improvements including replacing windows. If you click on the interactive graphic, Costs and benefits of home weatherization, you'll note that the payback for new windows can be up to 33 years. (The interactive graphic gives some good ideas about where to focus on weatherization activities.)
