Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

California High Speed Rail ballot initiative (for bond authority)

There is an article on Tree Hugger, "California to Vote on High-Speed Rail Nov. 4," which has some good links including to the California High-Speed Rail Authority's website, as well as state assemblywoman Fiona Ma's website High Speed Rail for California and to the Association for California High Speed Trains. Not surprisingly, anti-tax folks, such as the Howard Jarvis Association are against. Not surprisingly, leadership for improvements in the railroad passenger system are coming from the states, rather than the national government.

The referendum calls for $10 billion in bonding authority (which seems low if you ask me), and service from two spurs in Northern California (San Francisco and Sacramento), to as far south as San Diego.
