Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Speaking of paradigm shift and maturation

Christopher sends us a link to a Wall Street Journal video on bicycling in London. And the New York Times ran an article yesterday, "With Free Bikes, Challenging Car Culture on Campus," about increasing utilization and promotion of bicycling on college campuses. When once automobility was exhaustively promoted, now bicycling is being promoted as an inexpensive, healthy, and fun alternative. It also saves time.

(Today the theme seems to be about paradigms/ways of thinking and approaching urban design and placemaking.)
