Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

New transportation campaigns

Given the election as well as the upcoming push to reauthorize transportation enhancement funding, Reconnecting America has released a report, Jumpstarting the Transit Space Race, about capital needs for fixed-rail transit. Right now there are plans (in various stages) for almost 400 new projects in 37 states totalling about $248 billion + the cost of rehabilitation of present systems as well as bus systems. At the current federal funding rate, it would take 77 years to build all these projects.

A coalition has launched the Transportation For America campaign, with a five-point plan, "Build for America" to advocate for the new US DOT bill.
