Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Another example of LEED certification missing the point...

is that a proposed motorsports (speeding cars driven really really fast and loud besides) park in the Atlanta region will construct its buildings to LEED standards. See "Dawsonville motorsports park a dream for drivers" from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

More and more I think about absolute vs. relative standards--a Prius is better than an Escalade or a Hummer, definitely, but isn't the point optimal mobility, not relative improvements? Shouldn't a motorsports park not even be eligible for LEED certification, based on nature of the project?
