Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Congress Market at 5th and East Capitol Street SE, Washington, DC

Jewish Historical Society of Greater Washington photo. (They have a traveling exhibit which I guess is on in Fairfax somewhere right now.)

This is a very good example of the sociological theory of ecological succession/invasion-succession theory.

Now the market is owned by Korean-Americans. And btw, it and the other market at 4th and E. Capitol on on the NE side of the street, show how corner stores can be responsive to communities and neighborhood needs and be successful, and even provide fresh produce.
