Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Maryland transit cuts

See "Maryland Announces Transit Cuts" from Dr. Gridlock in the Washington Post and "MTA cuts service, keeps 10:05 train from Washington" from the Baltimore Sun for the specifics.

It is ironic that transit systems have experienced a significant rise in ridership due to gasoline price increases -- "Public transit use up over last year" from USA Today -- yet the systems have been severely stressed due to underfunding, and not having much in the way of slack resources -- lacking extra buses, subway cars, streetcars, or railroad cars and locomotives, as well as access to railroad tracks, limited capacity stations, and personnel, not to mention money -- to be able to respond to this opportunity.

This is but one example of massive cuts to transit service across the country, in the face of great demand and need, while road expansion favoring the private automobile will be funded under the proposed economic stimulus package.
