Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Preservation Maryland conference, May 28th and May 29th in Baltimore

The conference brochure just came out and the conference looks to have a number of interesting and important sessions.

It's Thursday May 28th and Friday May 29th.

Sadly, the DC Preservation Conference in on Friday May 29th and Saturday May 30th.

Sadly, the WalkingTownDC set of tours across the city (I am leading two tours, one of Florida Market, on on Capitol Hill's more western alleys) are on Saturday May 30th and Sunday May 31st.

Re: the Preservation Maryland Conference

Check out this session:

FRIDAY, MAY 29
Bike Tour of Historic Baltimore
6:30 – 8:30 am

Join local preservationists and bicycle enthusiasts for
a bike ride through historic neighborhoods, the waterfront
promenade and sites relating to the War of 1812.
This tour is part of Mayor Dixon’s Weekly Friday
Morning Bike Ride (often attended by Baltimore’s
Mayor when her schedule allows). The bike ride
begins at Baltimore City Hall, Lexington and Holiday
streets, at 6:30 am.

COST: $10. Includes bike rental and helmet.

Imagine the Mayor doing this weekly... imagine a DC City Councilmember doing something like this weekly...? An interesting comparison with Mayor Fenty is that DC's Mayor's participation in bicycling is more a solitary experience rather than a connecting one.

Since I do some consulting work in Maryland, it might be that I end up going to the Preservation Maryland conference, and missing out on DC's preservation conference. (And given that the Heritage Areas (potential clients) breakfast conflicts with the bike tour, I probably will miss out on the bike tour.)
