Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

4th Annual Livable, Walkable Awards, Monday, December 8th, 2010,Ward 6, Washington, DC

I think this is a great effort and initiative. The next step is to develop a citywide placemaking initiative and agenda. Of course, with the budget problems likely to be a continuing issue for the next 4 years, not to mention how livability and walkability (and bikability and transitability) were made out to be whitey issues during the last election, makes it unlikely that these types of issues to come up high on the Mayoral agenda anytime soon.
