Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

From email:

My intent was to write a longer piece with some related items. I''ll do a piece after the seminar and expand it along the lines I intended.

This past entry on the topic has links to the two manuals and a couple of other organizations doing similar work predating the coining of tactical urbanism as a "branded" approach.

-- Tactical Urbanism presentation

In the past, I'd been somewhat put off by the idea, having "mis-learned" about the process based on one-off initiatives in DC that were branded as tactical urbanism, but the reality is that tactical urbanism is aimed at building a long term program through various actions and engagements, unlike how it was handled in DC.
