Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Tower Hamlets use of garbage trucks as rolling billboards

Twitter photo by @Milo_Edwards.

Criticized for the use of garbage trucks as the medium ("Rubbish spot: London council mocked for placement of Brexit posters," Guardian) for the message of support for EU residents living in the London borough of Tower Hamlets, I still think the use of the garbage truck as "media" is an obvious opportunity that most local governments seem to miss.

I constantly suggest garbage trucks as a great medium for messages on solid waste, litter, and the environment, but there's no reason that the range of messages can't be broader.
