Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Bad design is everywhere

From time to time I post photos of particularly egregious DC popups--addition of a third floor to an existing rowhouse that had been two stories or houses that have been rebuilt with an ersatz design (facade) that has zero reference to DC architectural styles generally or what the house had been originally.

This is an example from Salt Lake City.  It's literally one of the worst I've ever seen.

Likely this is what the house looked like originally, based on the style of this house a few doors down.
One story house the same as the one down the street that has been popped up

I'm surprised it's legal for a house to not have second floor windows.
