Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Orange County Register coronavirus tracker graphic is a great model

Showing the value of local media in communicating locally important information, the newspaper is focused on only the one county, but it's a big county in population, more than 3 million residents.

It's also a decent example, in the vein of the work on graphical illustration of information by Edward Tufte, showing the power of multimedia to communicate.

Yep, I am not always quick enough to delete that stuff.

2. Will check out the articles. Did read something else about the Tesla thing, which really makes the historic preservation link a lot more difficult if the cost triples.

wrt life, we're basically all vaccinated now. Hopefully I can begin to become more engaged here. Working in both places didn't work out.

I got screwed on the Eastern Market thing. I still want to "write my own plan." But it will take a few hundred hours (+ I need to find someone to do some drawings) and I just haven't pulled the trigger and started, because it's such a big job for lack of compensation.

Tooze piece quite interesting. I should read some of his past work. The book on the Reich economy sounds interesting.

Really appreciate how you highlighted the importance of clear local data communication. When information is presented visually and focused on one community, it actually becomes useful instead of overwhelming. The Orange County example shows how thoughtful design can guide public understanding in real time. I saw a similar conversation on fairdeal recently about how visuals shape trust. Good reminder that sometimes clarity is the most powerful public service.

I really appreciate how this post highlights the importance of clear, localized communication—especially through good visual data. The Orange County Register example perfectly shows how design can make complex info accessible to everyone. Edward Tufte would definitely approve! Reading thoughtful insights like this feels refreshing, kind of like when I stumbled upon my99exch earlier—both spaces remind me how meaningful clarity and connection can be in digital communities.

This is such a thoughtful observation about how effective local journalism can be when it’s focused on the community it serves. The Orange County Register’s approach really shows how visual data can tell a story clearly and powerfully. It reminds me of how platforms like lotus365 also emphasize meaningful communication and connection through simple, impactful design that keeps people genuinely informed and engaged.

I really appreciate how this post highlights the importance of clear, localized communication, especially when it comes to something as crucial as public health data. The Orange County Register’s approach is a great example of how design and journalism can work hand in hand for community awareness. While checking updates on 11exch earlier, I found this article, and it reminded me how vital thoughtful visual storytelling is in urban and civic spaces.

I’ve had a great experience using Winadda because it offers a clean, fast, and highly user-friendly environment. Everything is arranged logically, making it extremely easy to move from one section to another without any confusion. The platform loads rapidly and works smoothly, which makes exploring features much more enjoyable. I appreciate the minimal but professional design that keeps everything simple yet effective. Even new users will find it simple to navigate due to its intuitive structure. The consistency in performance is truly commendable. I would surely recommend checking it out if you’re looking for an efficient, well-built platform.
