Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

1953 Presidential Inauguration edition of Transit News, the weekly newsletter of Capital Transit, the then transit operator

Recently, I managed to find some great ephemera.  The WMATA annual report for 1976 when Metrorail first began operating, and two issues of Transit News, the above-cited one, as well as the 1949 issue that explained the service changes resulting from the abandonment of the 10/12 streetcars on H Street-Benning Road to Rosslyn.

Also see "Should transit on inauguration day be free (Reprint)."

I quote from Peter Muller's paper, "Transportation and Urban Form: Stages in the Spatial Evolution of the American Metropolis," *Geography of Urban Transportation), all the time.  This back panel dovetails with the four stages of urban form that he discusses: Walking City; Streetcar City; Recreational Auto Era; and Metropolitan City.  The DC area was a few years away from developing its freeway network.
