Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Going Postal

Going Postal

Some Stockholm postpersons walk, some bike. This one decided to deliver Christmas mail on a bike. Theses are rugged bikes probably weighing 45 pounds (20 kgs). I forgot to check for studded tires but you definitely want studded tires to handle the ice.

Of course, most city postpeople deliver mail on foot, but use a vehicle as a staging platform.

I post this mostly to make the point that some government worktrips and jobs can be performed via bicycles, i.e., parking enforcement officers in the center city, rather than in vehicles.
