Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

U.S. House of Representatives to launch bikesharing program

Highest and best use of federal land -- parking lots
U.S. Senate staff parking lot.

A big big big problem with Congress is that many employees get free parking. So this means that there are big ugly parking lots around the House and Senate Office buildings. It also induces driving. I know of plenty of people who drive to work even if they live less than one or two miles away.

So finding this contract announcement requesting proposals to provide 30 bicycles for sharing at work (what Paul DeMaio's Bike Sharing Blog calls a "bike fleet," or bicycles provided to workers to use while at work) is nice to see. Maybe the next thing they'll do is increase federal gasoline excise taxes, or eliminate free parking...
