Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Getting there for less

Getting there for less - Boston.com.gif

Yesterday's Boston Globe article "T targets riders at suburban stations: Touts cleaning plans, savings in gas costs," contained this interesting graphic, comparing the cost of driving vs. the cost of transit. Of course, there's the cost of getting to the station. Montgomery County's Ride-On bus system makes this very easy. It's a step that other jurisdictions need to consider. And then, there's that free parking, an inducement to driving.

Still, it would be interesting to create a similar graphic for areas around the region.

Horse senseThe horse as the ultimate driving machine. Caption: Oneonta Daily Star photo by Julie Lewis. Jay Chase of Davenport rides his 12-year-old horse Will past gas stations at Main and River streets in Oneonta on Tuesday on his way home after running errands. Chase said this was the first time he has ridden the horse through the city, and he figured he saved $5 in gas by using the horse instead of his vehicle.
