Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Changing neighborhoods, changing businesses?

Peppers RestaurantPeppers Restaurant, from their website.

The WBJ article "Peppers sells to Bistrot du Coin staffers," is about how the owner of the restaurant once called Boss Shepherd's, on 17th Street NW, is selling out, and refocusing on his 14th Street NW restaurant. The owner comments on 17th Street-Dupont Circle--

"The houses are approaching $2 million" on 17th Street, Colameco says. "The people are 35 and 40 and they don't want nachos or bad Italian food. They're used to more upscale food."

It's telling that I used to like Boss Shepherd's nachos and Pasta Primavera back in the late 1980s. I suppose I'm not changing with the times. Is Dupont Kitchen the next to go?
