Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Urban, pedestrian-centric, mixed-use streets

Steve Pinkus, an urban transportation planner and occasional correspondent to this blog, has resurfaced and he sent me a number of photos, including Amsterdam, Manayunk in Philadelphia, and Washington Avenue in Hoboken, New Jersey (which has a more middle-market feel compared to Flatbush Avenue in Brooklyn).

Now that he has resurfaced, I hope he'll send more photos our way. Steve has the honor of witnessing my first Main Street presentation back in July 2002--it was more like a graduate school seminar lecture (I've gotten better since)--plus he was the one who recommended to me the great book, Steve Belmont's Cities in Full.
