Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

PPS is Seeking suggestions for improving your neighborhood

Michigangarden.jpgI think the efforts of the Greater Brookland Garden Club, such as their creation of an entryway garden at Michigan Avenue and 12th Streets NE is a good example of the kind of neighborhood improvement efforts that PPS is looking for. Photo from the GBGC website.

From Sandy Pan:

The Project for Public Spaces is collecting examples for a book entitled 101 Simple Things You Can Do to Make Your Neighborhood Great – a book that we hope will help people everywhere who are trying to make their communities more livable. If you have or know stories of ways people have enlivened neighborhoods, please email me or call me at PPS at 212-620-5660. Please send a few sentences describing your example, information on who to contact, and pictures, if possible. All examples will be credited to those who implemented the project.

Another good source of things you can do in your neighborhood is in the Asset-Based Community Development Institute publication City-Sponsored Community Building: Savannah's Grants for Blocks Story.
