Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

College Creek Public housing

I mentioned going on a tour of a "bad area" in Annapolis, recognizing that bad is relative. It's hard to figure out how much of "bad area" is SES and social conditions, and how much is other factors.

Urban renewal got to this area, and relatively new housing is already in plan for demolition. This public housing complex, some of which is still inhabited, is slated for revitalization.

The amazing thing is that this area is literally less than two blocks away from an attractive park and creek. So it's not merely about being in a place with great assets, two blocks away from downtown.

Some of urban renewal tore out large swaths of traditional housing--the kind of stuff that would sell for at least $325,000 in DC. And it took out a block and replaced it with a parking structure for downtown.

This spot is less than 5 minutes walk from this building.
