Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Crappy design: a solid argument for "intensification of land use" a/k/a "redevelopment"

3rd District Police HQ Parking deck. Another Flickr photo by Eye Captain.

His caption: This ugly parking garage at 17th & U is begging to be torn down and turned into luxury condos. It would also make a nice entrance for the Metro if they would extend the Green Line west from U St.

Note that I was looking at the Houston Business Journal and they have their real estate awards, called "Landmark Awards."

One category is "Best Land Deal" and the winner is "Downtown parking lots to be converted into mixed-use project."

Eyesores like these call out to be redeveloped. Many DC Government sites are truly eyesores/blight. This is one such site.

Although, rather than do condos at market-rate, since it is a government-owned site, I would recommend some type of perhaps as much as 100% affordable housing development, subsidized by not charging for the land.
