Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

A new solution to theft from auto (car break-ins)

ANC6A has called upon the Metropolitan Police Department to:

prepare a comprehensive plan of public safety strategies associated with the H Street NE Revitalization effort that is being supported by the DC government and private sector investment. Through the Mayor's Great Streets initiative, the DC government will spend tens of millions of dollars to improve the physical infrastructure of this corridor with the goal of supporting increased private investment, economic development and neighborhood livability. Accordingly, the plan needs to address specific strategies for the public safety of the residents as well as the anticipated new visitors that will increasingly find H Street a source of retail, arts, entertainment and dining options.

As an example of the public safety problems, the ANC stated:

...last month in PSA 102 there were 21 incidents of theft from auto versus 12 in April 2005, from January 1, 2006 to April 1, 2006 there were 111 incidents of theft from auto versus 78 from the same period a year ago.

Well, maybe the best "solution" to theft from auto is to not have a car... (related to my joke that since 80% of the murders in DC are between acquaintances, if you don't have friends, you're safer...)
