Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

From the Capitol Hill Restoration Society:

At 6:30 p.m. tonight, Capitol Hill resident, teacher, and architect Judith Capen will repeat her popular lecture and PowerPoint presentation on "What Style Is It?" at the Christ Church Parish Hall, 620 G Street, S.E.

The talk will highlight the eclectic mix of building styles found on Capitol Hill--Federal, Georgian, Richardsonian Romanesque, Queen Anne, Tudor Revival, Art Deco, and many more--and look at how roofs, cornices, and porches help define those styles.

Capen is the author of the CHRS pamphlet, Building Styles in the Capitol Hill Historic District. Sponsored by the Capitol Hill Restoration Society, the presentation is free and open to the public, no reservations needed.
