Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

The Wood Thrush is the state bird of DC

Anyway...yesterday I happened to spend time in a car, so I was listening to WETA radio. The show "Crossing East," about Asians in the United States, focused on immigrant entrepreneurs, including a Korean family that lost everything as a result of the 1992 LA riots, which reduced their store to a pile of ashes. Difficulties imposed by the City of Los Angeles led them to abandon that store, and open another. In the meantime, they lost their house.

And for the first time, I heard the radio show "Out and About," about area arts and culture. It's an excellent show--I heard bits on Nap Turner (Barry Bishop, a DC artist--I know his parents--has an exhibit at Roxanne's Artiques. He did the art for an album cover for Nap Turner), the State Theater in Falls Church, a theater review, about Center Stage and the Barns at Wolf Trap. I think there were more stories. It's a long show, but very good.

Twana James was introduced as the new evening host for WETA radio, debuting today (Monday). She lived in Atlanta for many years and she talked about coming home to DC, and how she missed "Mumbo Sauce," which I never heard of... apparently mumbo sauce, half duck sauce, half hot sauce, is served with chicken wings in the Chinese restaurants in Chinatown. But I never order chicken wings in a Chinese restaurant... only Chinese food.

There's a lot to learn about food, and foodways.
