Building interest in "working" in retail...

USA Today reports, in "Teen opts to go into ice cream business cold," about a Portland high school student who won ownership of a Maggie Moo's ice cream store. Alesha Coleman of Oregon chose the franchise over a $10,000 scholarship after winning a contest on writing a business plan sponsored by Maggie Moo's and Future Business Leaders of America-Phi Beta Lambda.

About 3 years ago, one of the ideas I suggested to the city was to create a similar kind of business plan process to support the development of independent retail businesses in DC. I was thinking of adults, but there would no reason to not have a category for high school students.

Granted, I was also thinking about the development of independent businesses rather than chains...
