Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

DC Streetcar Map as depicted in the Comprehensive Plan draft revision

Rather than make you go look at the plan, here is the diagram that I mentioned in the earlier blog entry, Transit without borders or five omissions "in" the Transportation Element of the DC "Comprehensive" Plan. This is page 18 of the Transportation Element, which is accessible here, Comprehensive Plan Citywide Elements.

As you can see, it's much less ambitous, although looking at it, it reminds me of the original proposals, before the public process got moving. I know afterwards they proposed a crosstown line to provide servcie to the Washington Hospital Center, as well as a line up Wisconsin Avenue, which we don't really see here.
