Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

This image ran yesterday in the Washington Post, to illustrate a grab bag of earnings reports. One was of Federal Realty Investment Trust. In new urbanism circles, the company is known for the development of Bethesda and Santana Rows. However, because mixed use costs more money upfront for development, it takes a little longer to turn a profit. And the "Row" crew got forced out of the company, which is now back to focusing on strip shopping center development in the suburbs, usually anchored by a supermarket.
