Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Wisdom from Bill Bradley

in last Sunday's New York Times Magazine, in the article, "QUESTIONS FOR BILL BRADLEY; Rules of the Game."

1. What domestic issues would you like to see the Democrats champion, beyond representation of middle-class interests? We fought two wars on oil in the last 15 years, and yet we are not willing to fight against oil dependence. If we simply had the same gas-mileage average as Europe does, about 43 miles per gallon, we would import no oil from OPEC. Zero.

2. What do you think is the best exercise? Walking outside, about five miles a day. People want a more intense experience, not realizing that walking is an intense experience. Maybe they prefer the gym with its machines because it’s a social experience. A place to work your charisma? I don’t think so. It’s hard to have a conversation when you are on the elliptical.
