Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Alley tour recap

I promised the 140+ people who went on the alley tour that I would post the information sheet we prepared, with the addition of photographs and images. BUT I am working on a paper right now, so it's going to be a couple more days before I am able to get to this.

However, we will add some references based on some of the questions that we got, including more specific information about stables, horses, and the removal of horse dung, etc. from the city's streets and alleys.

A book about to come out, The Horse in the City: Living Machines in the Nineteenth Century, by Clay McShane and Joel Tarr will likely answer some of those questions.
