Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

DC Sierra Club Volunteer Night Tonight on Streetcars

DC Transit 70 streetcar line, 1941
This view of streetcars on the SW Mall loop (opened in March, 1941) was built to serve Government buildings. The loop was from Independce Ave SW, south on 3rd St, east on D St and north on 2nd St back t o Independence Ave. The homes in the background were eventually demolished. This view was from a 1941 issue of Transit Journal. Dick Kotulak

From e-mail:

The FOOD, FOLKS, AND FUN! Volunteer Night: Streetcar Initiative will be tonight from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM at the Sierra Club Legislative Office (401 C Street NE).

Volunteers will write letters to Mayor Fenty, Council Chairman Gray, Councilmember Wells (Ward 6), and Councilmember Alexander (Ward 7) to express concern that DDOT's streetcar initiative appears to have run out of gas and to ask these elected officials to support the fastest possible implementation of earlier plans for a 50-mile streetcar network in general and continued progress on the H Street-Benning Road line specifically.

The night will also include a screening of the PBS documentary "Taken for a Ride," which tells the story of how General Motors, Firestone and others conspired to kill our nation's streetcar systems.

Please contact Clayton Wilkerson now at 919-539-1469 or claytonwilkerson@yahoo.com now to reserve your spot and slice [of pizza].
