Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Stuff to read

From the Foundation Center enewsletter:

1. The Community Tool Box, an initiative of the Work Group for Community Health and Development at the University of Kansas and the Quantum Foundation, in collaboration with the Area Health Education Center/Community Partners in Amherst, Massachusetts, provides more than six thousand pages of skill-building information on more than two hundred and fifty health- and development-related topics, including leadership, strategic planning, community assessment, and grant writing.

2. A new report from the
RAND Corporation offers policy recommendations for strengthening the arts and culture in large urban areas. Commissioned by the William Penn Foundation and the Greater Philadelphia Cultural Alliance, the report, Arts and Culture in the Metropolis (124 pages, PDF), evaluates support for the arts in eleven metropolitan regions and suggests that civic leaders use cultural institutions to help advance economic development and neighborhood revitalization strategies.
