Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Take it outside may be the wrong policy

Today's print copy of The Express has a quote (which I am unable to screen capture at the moment) that bears response.

"I no longer patronize the bar or club scene in D.C. or anywhere else. The environment is not only unsafe inside most places, but outside as well. I will say, though, that in this recent incident, the club owners took every precaution, such as hiring additional security and such."

I am not sure I agree.

Kicking people out merely displaces violence from inside the club to outside. If the two people fighting had been detained, and then police called to arrest them, the one person wouldn't have been able to murder the other. Granted it is difficult to ask clubs to install mini-jails, but detaining the people, keeping them separated, getting the police, would have likely meant no stories on the TV news about another murder in DC.
