Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Bike sharing blog

One of my favorite and only must-read blogs in the area, Washcycle, calls our attention to Arlington's Paul DeMaio and his blog on bike sharing systems and projects. Paul has a consultancy focusing on this area. I've added a link to this blog in the right sidebar.

1. DC is implementing a system through Adshel.
2. We need to get WMATA to do the same thing.
3. Maybe Amtrak could do this at Penn Station in Baltimore (since DC is doing a Bike Station at Union Station in DC already).
4. And the other jurisdictions in certain urban places -- i.e., Montgomery at least in Bethesda and Silver Spring.
5. Plus Baltimore...

I think that one of the problems of government agencies is that they don't work to pursue multiple simultaneous objectives when creating such systems. One logical market segment of interest is tourists. Even in-region visitors. For example, I could go to Baltimore for the day and just do bike sharing for the day, rather than schlep my bike back and forth between the regions.
