Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

From Ruthie Mundell, Marketing and Outreach Manager, Community Forklift:

Now announcing our sales for the month of June:

1) Green Dot Sale: $5 for any stainless steel sink with a green dot
2) Vinyl tiles are ten cents each, or $4.50 for a box of 45.
3) Recessed Lights are just ten cents each! Sale applies to
used/salvaged recessed lighting.

Also, you still have several chances to earn store credit in the month of June. Remember, you earn good karma, our gratitude, and FIVE BUCKS OF STORE CREDIT for every hour you volunteer :-) Please call 301-985-5180 or email
ruthie@communityforklift.com if you can help for even a few hours. We always appreciate help in the store, but we could REALLY use some volunteers on Saturdays:

* This Saturday (June 9), we need help at Capitol Heights Day and at the Block Party at the Boys and Girls Club at 17th and Massachusetts SE. You would sit at our booth, hand out flyers, and tell folks about all the money (and natural resources!) they can save at Community Forklift.

For both events, we particularly need someone with a car who can pack up the booth at the end of the afternoon, and bring it back to the store that night or during the week.

* Next Saturday (June 16) is Edmonston Day. I'd really like to have a good showing, considering it's Community Forklift's home town!

* June 30th will also be an important Saturday. There are two great events going on: the Green Expo at the Rockville Library, and the "East of the River Eco-Expo" in Southeast DC (at the Boys and Girls Club at 1901 Mississippi Ave SE). While you're there volunteering, take some time to tour the other booths and pick up more ideas for greening your home.

And remember, if there's an upcoming event in your neck of the woods that we should attend, please let me know.
