Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Development in Underserved Retail Markets

Had a conversation with a real estate broker who I've known for awhile. He commented on how (1) this is a process; (2) that isn't new to DC; (3) that he sees in some people a greater sophistication as our experience of leading with our hearts hasn't always been working. (He was surprised to hear me say that with a side project I'm working on in Pittsburgh, that I've recommended that they develop a specific retail attraction program for specific brands-chain stores in furniture and home accessories, to complement their current store mix and to strengthen their position in their market.)

He shared this paper, "Development in Underserved Retail Markets," which was published a few years ago by the International Council of Shopping Centers.

More stuff to learn.
