Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Retaining independent retail downtown...

The Free Ride blog of the Express reports that Reeves Bakery is going to close because they can't negotiate favorable lease terms. Interesting turn of events, along with the impending closure of the independent Benson's Jewelers store on the other side of the block on F Street NW... (See "Eating Around: Reeves Bakery Is Closing.")

Indicators of the difficulties of retaining independent retailers downtown given how properties tend to be owned by national (and international) companies?
