Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Streetcars in Baltimore

Proposed streetcar system for Baltimore
Proposed streetcar system for Baltimore. Concept and image by Gerald Neilly.

There is a proposal for a Charles Street streetcar system that is being bandied about in Baltimore. Transportation is an ever present topic on the Envision Baltimore googlegroup and the perennial topic is that Baltimore doesn't have a transportation network even though it has a number of transportation assets.

Gerry Neilly is a transportation planner in Baltimore, ex-employee of the city, now a consultant, and blogger at Baltimore InnerSpace, and he has a few entries envisioning a broader streetcar system for Baltimore that you should read:

-- Streetcars (A STREETCAR SYSTEM FOR THE 21st CENTURY:WHERE IT WOULD FIT)
-- Streetcars - Part 0
-- Streetcars - Part 2

Note that Gerry is one of the few bloggers who writes entries much longer than mine.
