Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Despite the hype, 90% of New urbanism is greenfield development

This press release was forwarded to me by one of my correspondents from New Zealand. "Worldwide Participation Sought for the Creation of a New Florida Town," describing a new urbanism development to be designed by DPZ. Nigel writes:

as much as I am all for well designed urban areas, do we REALLY need to destroy MORE of rural FL just to do this? At this rate , the only rural area FL will soon have will just be the Everglades National Park!!

That being said, I appreciate new urbanism for its resuscitation in the United States of the principles of urban design.
