Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

To Live and Die in Los Angeles

(Yes, I know my movie and music references date me as a Boomer. Different age cohorts have different reference points, which is something revitalization professionals have to be conscious of, being responsive to different age demographics.)

1. Live. See "Good signs downtown, but vision still lacking," a Steve Lopez column from the LA Times about improvements in Downtown LA, but a need to focus on extending the quality of the public space. Check out two mentioned groups, Park(ing) Day LA and the Los Angeles Alliance for a New Economy.

2. Die. See "A life lost to graffiti," about a woman protesting graffiti being shot to death by a tagging crew, from the Los Angeles Times.
