Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Why I'm not for traffic calming any more

From the Urbanists e-list:

My regional transit agency is reducing service to my job, shifting it to another office park a long walk away. Why? Because my employer's street has speed bumps, which slow down the buses coming in from downtown (and needless to say, commuters from downtown take priority over everyone else, since there are more of them!).

So if anyone suggests speed bumps in your neighborhood, fight them unless they are on the kind of purely residential street that will never, ever, ever have transit service.

As I always say, it's better to focus on redesigning the street through materials and other changes rather than adding various impositions.
