Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

H Street, that Great Street

Frozen Tropics has a link to a Washington Post "Going Out Gurus" post about H Street evening establishments. There are a couple comments on the FT entry. All are good, about the experience on H Street, and how it is not likely to appeal to the kind of people who hang out in Georgetown a la "Late Night Shots."

Last night I was on the corridor for a moment and I noticed that while the "Brickyard" -- Dr. Granville Moore's -- was packed, many of the other establishments had but a few people inside.

That might communicate something about the need for the basics--good and interesting food and tasty drinks--which the Brickyard provides in copious quantities. That "entertainment" destinations are more likely to be lively on Friday and Saturday nights, while the neighborhood tavern-like places may be able to have decent business every night of the week.
Street reconstruction on H Street
Street reconstruction is coming to H Street. In the short run, this will reduce business somewhat. In the long run, it will strengthen business.
